Eiko and Ryomi were surprised when they entered the studio one final time, only to see their old friend Caitlyn already sitting at one end of the sofa.  She was wearing a black tank top and blue jeans, with shiny black boots.  It was the same outfit, more or less, she had been wearing when she accosted Eiko in the street some time ago.


Eiko and Ryomi entered the camera shot and took their places on the sofa, as per usual.

"Good afternoon, Austraria," Eiko began, in her studied pidgin English.  "Today is very special programme - rast one, in fact.  We talk --"

"--This is where you fuckers make that goddamn show, isn't it?" Caitlyn interjected, without moving. "Oh my god what is going on? Who are you two and where are Elizabeth and Rachel?"

"The Japanese Hegemon," part 7

Debuko led Elizabeth and Ryomi inside the studio, to a room adjacent to where they filmed.  Chiyami waited there, wearing a long, strappy, sleeveless black dress.  Like Debuko, her black hair was up.  She lounged on a cushion on the tatami mat, her legs crossed.  The black straps and heels of her sandals protruded, as did her pedicured toes, which bore a clear lacquer.  Before her was a low table with a sake cup set up on each side.  Debuko and the Australian girls joined Chiyami on cushions.

In Japanese, Debuko went on.  "We are most pleased with your service.  Are you happy at the service you have provided us?"

Weeks went by.  Elizabeth and Ryomi continued their programme daily.  It was the only programme aired on Australian television, with the episode for a given day repeated nonstop on every channel until the next day's episode was available.  Australian residents' travel was still highly restricted, as were Internet and phone.  With little else to do, the country, by and large, tuned in.  Massive viewership led to massive societal change, with no visible unrest.

Elizabeth woke up with a start, a mess of black hair in her face.  She had fallen asleep, just for a few minutes, intertwined with the naked body of her friend Ryomi, formerly known as Rachel.  Ryomi turned over and smiled before moving in for a deep kiss, which Elizabeth returned with passion.  Her friend was really getting the hang of this whole Japanese look, and Elizabeth found it very attractive.

Reluctantly, Elizabeth broke the kiss.  They had to get ready and go to the studio, to film their programme.  It was their chance to please their new Japanese friends, and Elizabeth wouldn't squander it.

"The Japanese Hegemon," part 4

Elizabeth paced nervously in her apartment.  Today, she and her friend Rachel would film the first installment of their television programme.  It had been a week since the magnificence of Japanese culture - and the inferiority of the West - was brought to her attention, and this program was her opportunity to help her new Japanese friends explain the way things would work from now on.
